How Perplexity Shopping actually works

Short answer
Perplexity Shopping answers a shopping question with unsponsored product cards alongside its normal response. Perplexity states the cards are not sponsored. In-chat checkout is Instant Buy, built with PayPal and open to all US users, and the discovery experience is powered by platform integrations including Shopify.
The three pieces
Perplexity's shopping experience, as described in its own launch announcement, has three parts. They are worth separating because merchants routinely talk about them as one thing.
| Feature | What it is | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Product cards | Visual product results shown alongside the written answer | Anything in Perplexity's product index |
| Snap to Shop | Visual search from a photo of an item | Shoppers, no merchant action |
| Instant Buy | Checkout inside Perplexity, built with PayPal | All US users, select merchants, orders fulfilled by the merchant |
The cards are not sponsored
Perplexity states this directly about its product cards: they are not sponsored, and are unbiased recommendations tailored to the search by its AI. The launch post separately notes that the merchant programme is distinct from and unrelated to its sponsored question ad products.
Which means the honest boundary applies here as everywhere else. Nobody sells placement in Perplexity's organic product recommendations, so any tool offering to get you recommended is describing something that is not for sale. What you can influence is whether your data is good enough to be picked.
Shopify stores are already in scope
The launch announcement says the discovery experience is powered by platform integrations including Shopify, which gives access to the most recent and relevant information on products across Shopify-powered businesses globally that sell and ship to the US.
Two conditions in that sentence do the work. Globally, meaning your store does not have to be American. And sell and ship to the US, meaning American shipping is the gate. If you ship to the US, your Shopify catalogue is in scope without you joining anything.
What decides whether you show up
Nobody outside Perplexity knows the ranking, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. What is knowable is the input, which is the same input every AI shopping surface reads.
Your product titles and descriptions have to carry the attributes a shopper's question contains. A query about a dishwasher-safe stoneware mug under 300 kroner can only match a product whose data mentions the material and the property. That is a data completeness problem, not a ranking problem, and it is the one part of this you fully control.
- Titles carrying brand, material, size and the distinguishing attribute
- Descriptions with enough substance to match a specific question
- Accurate price and availability, since stale data is worse than thin data
- PerplexityBot allowed, so your pages can be read and linked
Perplexity is one of the surfaces that sends clicks
Worth saying because it changes the value of the work. Perplexity cites its sources inline and links them, so an answer that uses your page can produce a visit rather than absorbing the sale into the assistant.
That puts it in a different category from surfaces that answer without attribution, and it is why blocking PerplexityBot is a more expensive mistake than it looks. We wrote out the crawler decision separately.
Frequently asked questions
Are Perplexity's product recommendations paid placements?
No. Perplexity states its product cards are not sponsored and are unbiased recommendations tailored by its AI, and that the merchant programme is distinct from and unrelated to its sponsored question ad products.
Do I need to join the merchant program to appear in Perplexity Shopping?
Not as a Shopify store. Perplexity's launch post says the discovery experience is powered by platform integrations including Shopify, covering Shopify businesses globally that sell and ship to the US.
What happened to Buy with Pro?
It was the original 2024 checkout, Pro subscribers only with Perplexity-funded free shipping, and it was replaced by Instant Buy with PayPal in November 2025. Instant Buy covers all US users, keeps the retailer as merchant of record, and carries no free-shipping subsidy. Where in-chat checkout is unavailable, Perplexity links the shopper to the merchant's own site.
Does my store have to be in the US?
No, but you have to ship there. Perplexity describes the Shopify integration as covering Shopify-powered businesses globally that sell and ship to the US, so the gate is US shipping rather than US incorporation.
