Perplexity's Merchant Program, explained for Shopify stores
Last reviewed
Short answer
Perplexity's Merchant Program is free and entered through a five-question interest form, not a feed upload. Perplexity's launch post describes it as aimed at large retailers and lists four benefits: product index inclusion, Buy with Pro payment integration, free API access and a trends dashboard. Shopify stores reach Perplexity without it.
What the program is
Perplexity operates a merchant program aimed at getting real product catalogs into its shopping answers rather than relying purely on crawling. It is free, and the way in is a five-question interest form after which Perplexity contacts merchants it wants to work with.
There is no self-serve upload and no published field specification. Perplexity's launch post says twice that the program is for large retailers, which reads as an enterprise pipeline rather than a channel a small store switches on. We went through what is and is not published.
What you get
Per Perplexity's own materials the program covers inclusion in the product index, eligibility to be a recommended product, Buy with Pro checkout, free API access and an analytics dashboard. As always, eligibility is not the same as placement, and being in the index does not mean being recommended.
The realistic framing: this is a channel connection, like listing on a marketplace. It removes a structural reason you would never appear. It does not make you appear.
How this fits with the Shopify side
Shopify's agentic syndication covers ChatGPT and related surfaces. Perplexity is reached a different way, and for a Shopify store it is not the merchant program: Perplexity's own launch post credits platform integrations including Shopify for its product data, covering Shopify businesses globally that sell and ship to the US. If you ship to the US you are already in scope.
The data you submit is the same data you would fix anyway. If your titles fail the published feed rules, submitting them to another surface just distributes the problem. Fix the source first.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity's merchant program cost anything?
No. Perplexity's launch post lists the program as free for merchants, with free API access among the stated benefits. Entry is an interest form rather than a paid or self-serve onboarding.
Is joining the merchant program enough to get recommended?
No. It makes you eligible to appear and to be a recommended product. Whether you are recommended for a given question depends on the assistant's own selection, which is not purchasable.
Do I need it if Shopify already syndicates my catalog?
Probably not. Perplexity's launch post says its shopping experience is powered by platform integrations including Shopify, covering Shopify businesses globally that sell and ship to the US. The form takes two minutes, so it is worth filling in, but it is not the path that gets a Shopify store in.
