Joining the Perplexity Merchant Program, and whether you need to
Last reviewed
Short answer
The program is free and the signup is a short interest form: business name, website, contact details, then a manual review. Perplexity's launch language aims it at large retailers, and no terms of service are currently published. A Shopify store is already partly covered without it, since Shopify's integration syncs product data to Perplexity, and Shopify's own guidance says the program can improve visibility by adding more complete data.
What you are actually signing up for
The launch announcement of November 2024 lists the offer: inclusion in the shopping index with better recommendation odds, payment integrations for in-chat checkout, free API access, and a merchant dashboard with search and shopping trend insights. It states the program is free and explicitly unrelated to Perplexity's ad products.
Two honesty notes from checking at source. The launch language says large retailers, twice, and the program's terms of service page currently returns a not-found error, so what the dashboard and data-sharing terms are today is not publicly documented. Open but dormant remains the fair description, and applying costs five minutes against that uncertainty.
The steps, such as they are
There is no merchant portal with a progress bar. The path is the interest form linked from the launch post, and reports from merchants describe a manual review measured in days. Nothing else about your store changes while you wait.
- Open the interest form linked in the sources below
- Provide business name, website, and contact details
- Describe your catalog honestly, category and size
- Submit and note the date in your own records
- No response is common enough that silence should not alarm you
Whether a Shopify store needs it at all
Partly no: Perplexity's own launch materials say its shopping is powered by platform integrations including Shopify, covering stores globally that sell and ship to the US, so your products can surface without any application. Shopify's April 2026 guidance adds the reason to apply anyway: the program can improve visibility because it gives the system access to more complete product data.
The decision is therefore easy at both ends. Applying is five free minutes with plausible upside. Not applying costs you nothing you can currently measure. What actually moves Perplexity outcomes either way is the same thing its help pages say gets products recommended: deeper product detail, availability, reviews, pricing and specifications, which is the catalog work you control today, form or no form.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Perplexity Merchant Program really free?
Yes, per the launch announcement, which also states it is distinct from and unrelated to Perplexity's sponsored ad products. No payment details are part of the signup.
I'm a small store. Will they take me?
Unknown, honestly. The launch language targets large retailers, and acceptance behavior for small stores is not publicly documented. The form does not stop you, the cost is minutes, and your discoverability through the Shopify integration does not depend on the answer.
How long until I hear back?
Secondary reports describe manual review within about a week, and plenty of applicants report silence. Treat the application as fire-and-forget rather than a launch dependency.
Can I pay Perplexity to be recommended instead?
No. Perplexity's help pages state advertisers cannot pay to appear in its related products, and that merchants providing deeper product details are more likely to be recommended by the answer engine. The lever is data, which is free and yours.
