How to get your Shopify store recommended by ChatGPT
Last reviewed
Short answer
You cannot buy it: OpenAI states product results are selected independently and are not ads. What you control is being present and being readable. Presence comes through Shopify Catalog, which syndicates eligible products automatically. Readable means titles and descriptions that pass the published feed rules, crawler access for OAI-SearchBot, and third-party evidence like reviews that assistants demonstrably draw on.
How ChatGPT chooses products, in OpenAI's words
OpenAI's shopping documentation, read on 29 August 2026, says a product appears when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to the shopper's intent, drawing on the query, the user's context, structured metadata from providers such as price and product description, and OpenAI's safety and product policies. It states plainly that product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships.
When several merchants sell the same item, OpenAI says merchants are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item. Notice what is on that list: operational facts, not marketing. And notice the warning it carries for messy data: ChatGPT may generate simplified product titles and descriptions from what it receives, so what a shopper sees is a rewrite of what you provided.
You are probably already in the pipe
OpenAI's help page states that for merchants on Shopify, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and that no additional work is required from individual merchants. Shopify's side says the same: the channel is active by default for eligible stores.
So the first question is not how to get in, it is whether anything is keeping you out. That is an eligibility checklist, and we wrote it out separately. If your products pass, presence is handled and everything from here is about being chosen.
The lever you fully control: product data
The feed spec OpenAI publishes for commerce is explicit about quality. Titles: maximum 150 characters, avoid all-caps. Descriptions: up to 5,000 characters, plain text. Brand and seller name capped at 70 characters. Recommended attributes, in the spec's own words, improve ranking, relevance, and user trust: rich media, reviews, performance signals, plus identifiers like GTIN and MPN.
This is the same work the feed rules page describes, and it is where a store called Ceramic Mug loses to a store called 12oz Stoneware Mug, Dishwasher Safe, Matte Black. An assistant assembling an answer to a constrained question needs the constraint answered in your data. Titles are the deepest part of that hole for most catalogs.
The lever most stores have backwards: crawler access
Catalog syndication covers your product feed. Your web pages are a second, separate path, and it runs through OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI recommends allowing it in robots.txt to appear in search results, and states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Changes take about 24 hours to register.
The common failure is a copied blocklist that takes out OAI-SearchBot along with the training bots. The decision framework is a page of its own, and the short version is: block training if you want, never block search and user-fetch agents while hoping to be recommended.
The layer you only influence: evidence
Everything above gets you accurately represented. Being chosen over a competitor draws on evidence ChatGPT reads elsewhere, and here the honest sourcing is third-party research rather than OpenAI statements. Profound's July 2026 analysis of over 800,000 product cards found feed-sourced offers dominating the top position, and Reddit supplying roughly a third of shopping citations. Their June 2026 study found reviews, Q&A and comparison content on product pages correlating with higher ranking.
That is correlation research, not a spec, and we label it as such. But it points the same direction as the broader mention studies: assistants trust what the rest of the internet says about you. Reviews you can earn, questions you can answer on your own product pages, and communities you can show up in honestly. None of it is a hack, all of it compounds.
What does not work
Paying. OpenAI states ads are separate from product results and that results are not influenced by partnerships. Any vendor promising guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling a mechanism OpenAI says does not exist.
Keyword stuffing also fails on arrival, because the model rewrites what it shows. And a single test prompt proves nothing either way: results vary run to run and are shaped by the asker's own context. Watch the trend across many prompts, which is what measurement means here.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay OpenAI to recommend my products?
No. OpenAI states product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads, and are not influenced by partnerships. ChatGPT does sell ads, and states they are separate from product results.
Do I need an app for my products to reach ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI and Shopify both state Shopify product data is integrated automatically through Shopify Catalog with no additional merchant work. Tools help with the quality of the data being syndicated, which is what selection actually runs on.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
Work the list in order: are your products Catalog-eligible, is your product data complete enough to answer the shopper's constraint, is OAI-SearchBot allowed, and does the competitor carry more third-party evidence such as reviews and community mentions. The first three you can fix this week.
How long until changes show up in ChatGPT?
Robots.txt changes register in about 24 hours per OpenAI. Product data flows through Shopify Catalog, which Shopify describes as continuously updating. OpenAI acknowledges price and shipping changes may lag. Treat a week as the honest horizon, and judge trends rather than single answers.
