Agentic Storefronts: what Shopify switched on for your store
Last reviewed
Short answer
Agentic Storefronts is Shopify's system for making stores visible to AI assistants, and it is active by default for eligible stores. It feeds product data through Shopify Catalog to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Meta. ChatGPT is discovery only; Copilot and Google surfaces can also check out directly. Controls live under Sales channels, then Agentic.
What it is, and when it arrived
Shopify announced agentic storefronts on 10 December 2025 as part of the Winter '26 Edition, with the line that every Shopify store would be agent-ready by default. By spring 2026 it was live: Shopify's help documentation now states plainly that agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores.
The mechanism underneath is Shopify Catalog. Products that meet Catalog's published requirements are included automatically and syndicated to the AI channels. There is no setup task that makes this start. It already started.
The channels, and what each one can do
Shopify's help docs currently list five channels. They are not equivalent, and the difference that matters is whether the assistant can complete a purchase or only show your products.
One footnote on the list itself: Perplexity appeared in the December 2025 announcement but is not in the current help-doc channel list. Perplexity reaches Shopify stores through its own merchant program instead.
| Channel | What it does | Status per Shopify's docs |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Discovery. Buyers are sent to your own checkout | Active by default for eligible stores |
| Microsoft Copilot | Discovery plus direct checkout inside the chat | Direct checkout on by default, no fees |
| Google AI Mode | Discovery plus direct checkout | Early access, not yet available to all stores |
| Gemini | Discovery plus direct checkout | Early access, grouped with Google AI Mode |
| Meta | Discovery | Listed in the current channel list |
What 'on by default' actually means
Eligibility is checked at two levels. The store has to be on a Starter plan or higher, out of password mode, in good account standing and compliant with Shopify's terms. Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero and publication to your online store channel. Pass both and inclusion is automatic.
That default is also what upset people. It arrived without an opt-in, and for a while the forums believed there was no way out. That belief is out of date: the controls exist and we listed every one of them.
What it costs
Nothing, on the current documentation. Shopify's ChatGPT page states there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your standard payment processing, and the direct checkout page says the same for Microsoft Copilot.
That was not always true. For roughly eight weeks in early 2026, in-chat purchases through ChatGPT's Instant Checkout carried a reported 4% fee. That checkout path was retired in March 2026, and with it the fee.
What this changes about the work
The channels are plumbing, and the plumbing is done for you. What flows through it is your product data: titles, descriptions, images, prices, availability. An assistant deciding between your product and a competitor's is reading exactly what sits in your admin.
So the work is the same work this whole site describes: get the titles readable, fill the descriptions, check the feed rules, and measure whether anything mentions you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Agentic Storefronts on for my store?
If your store meets the eligibility requirements, yes, it is active by default. You can confirm under Sales channels, then Agentic in your Shopify admin, which lists each AI channel and its current state.
Do I pay Shopify or OpenAI a commission on these sales?
Shopify's current help pages state there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT or in Microsoft Copilot's direct checkout beyond your standard payment processing fees. The 4% fee reported in early 2026 applied to ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, which was retired in March 2026.
Can I turn it off?
Mostly, yes. There is a master management toggle, per-channel controls including a ChatGPT Catalog-access opt-out, and an Unlisted product status for removing individual products. We list every control on a separate page.
Do I need an app to be part of this?
No. Inclusion runs through Shopify Catalog automatically once your store and products meet the requirements. Apps can help with the quality of the data being syndicated, which is a different job.
