The requirements a Shopify store has to meet for ChatGPT shopping
Last reviewed
Short answer
Your store needs the Starter plan or higher, must not be password protected, must sell to customers in the United States, and must be in good account standing. Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, and publication to your online store, Hydrogen or Headless channel.
Store level requirements
These gate the whole store. Fail one and no amount of product data work will help, which is why they are first.
- Sell to customers in the United States, though the store itself can be based anywhere
- Starter plan or higher
- Not password protected
- Comply with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy
- Agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service
- Complete your store policies
Account standing, which is the quiet one
Shopify also requires good account standing, and unlike the plan requirement this one is not a yes or no you can read off a settings page. It is assessed on sales history, order fulfilment, chargeback rates and timely invoice payments.
Shopify's own list of what contributes includes verifying your email and enabling two-step authentication, establishing genuine sales history with real customers, keeping chargebacks low, fulfilling orders promptly, paying invoices on time, keeping a Shopify Payments account in good standing, and resolving compliance issues.
The practical read: a brand new store with no orders is not obviously eligible, and a store with a chargeback problem may quietly not be. Neither of those failure modes announces itself.
Product level requirements
Per product, and these are the ones a large catalogue tends to fail on in scattered places rather than all at once.
| Requirement | Common failure |
|---|---|
| A title and at least one product image | Imported products with no image |
| A price greater than zero | Free samples and gift items, which are excluded |
| Published to online store, Hydrogen or Headless | Products only published to a POS or wholesale channel |
| An identifiable product URL | Headless setups not using the correct route format |
| Not Unlisted status | Products deliberately hidden but still active |
| Not hidden from search engines | A noindex left on from a past SEO cleanup |
| No sensitive content, such as mature content | Category-level exclusion, not fixable by editing |
B2B products are excluded automatically
Shopify excludes B2B-only products without asking. That covers products published only to B2B markets or assigned to B2B catalogs, products that require customer authentication before they can be viewed, and anything behind a password-protected storefront.
If you run a mixed B2C and B2B catalogue this is worth checking rather than assuming, because the exclusion is silent and it is applied per product.
The 6,000 character rule
The requirement almost nobody writes about, and the most actionable thing on this page. Shopify's ChatGPT documentation says to ensure your product descriptions include any relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters.
For most stores that is not a constraint, since most descriptions are nowhere near that long. It bites on the ones that append long care instructions, size charts, shipping tables and boilerplate to every product, which is exactly the pattern that pushes a genuine disclosure past the cut. If you sell anything with a required warning, check where it sits.
What gets sent once you pass
Shopify lists products by default with their title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes, structured so AI agents can parse and understand them.
Note that the list is all merchant-editable fields. There is no hidden layer and no keyword box. Whether those fields are good enough is the other half of the job.
Frequently asked questions
What Shopify plan do I need for ChatGPT shopping?
Starter plan or higher, per Shopify's Catalog requirements. The store also cannot be password protected and must comply with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
Why are some of my products not in Shopify Catalog?
The usual causes are a missing image, a price of zero, Unlisted status, being hidden from search engines, not being published to the online store, Hydrogen or Headless channel, or being a B2B-only product, which Shopify excludes automatically.
Are free products included?
No. Shopify requires a price greater than zero, and free products are excluded from Catalog.
What is the 6,000 character requirement?
Shopify's ChatGPT documentation asks merchants to ensure product descriptions include any relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters. It matters most for stores that append long boilerplate to every description.
