Why isn't my store showing up in ChatGPT? The reasons, in order
Last reviewed
Short answer
Work the list in order: your store fails a Catalog eligibility requirement, individual products are excluded, your category is prohibited by OpenAI's commerce policies, OAI-SearchBot is blocked, your product data is too thin to match the question, or you are present but outranked. Also possible: you checked with one prompt, and one prompt proves nothing.
1. Your store fails an eligibility gate
Store-level requirements gate everything: a Starter plan or higher, no password page, selling to customers in the United States, completed policy pages, agreement to the supplemental terms, and good account standing, which Shopify assesses on sales history, fulfilment and chargebacks. Fail one and no product work matters.
The quiet one is account standing, because it is not a checkbox you can read. A brand new store with no sales history is not obviously eligible yet. The full list, with the product-level rules, is here.
2. Individual products are excluded
Catalog excludes products with no title or image, a price of zero, no identifiable product URL, or publication missing from your online store channel. The Unlisted status and the older hidden-from-search-engines setting both remove a product too, and so does B2B-only publication.
This is the usual answer to the more confusing symptom, some products appearing while others never do. The excluded ones almost always trip one of these wires, and the product list in your admin will not flag it for you.
3. Your category is prohibited, and the list is longer than you think
OpenAI's commerce policies, updated 24 June 2026, prohibit the categories you would guess: adult products, gambling, weapons, tobacco and vapes, alcohol above 0.5% ABV, cannabis, counterfeits. They also prohibit one that catches whole verticals off guard: supplements, described as ingestible products marketed for weight loss, sexual enhancement, bodybuilding, detoxification, or other health-related effects.
If you sell in a prohibited category, no data quality work changes the outcome, and knowing that saves you the effort. OpenAI also reserves the right to remove products or sellers for any reason, which is worth reading as written.
4. OAI-SearchBot is blocked
OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. If a copied robots.txt blocklist or a CDN bot rule caught it, your web pages are invisible to ChatGPT search even while your feed data flows through Catalog, which produces a strange half-presence.
Check your rendered robots.txt at yourstore.com/robots.txt and look up each token. If you run your own Cloudflare zone in front of anything, check that too, especially before September 15. Fixes register in about 24 hours per OpenAI.
5. Your product data cannot match the question
Shoppers ask assistants constrained questions: material, size, budget, use case. A product titled with two generic words gives the model nothing to match against the constraint, and OpenAI's own guidance rewards attribute-complete titles and substantial descriptions inside the published limits.
This is the reason that remains after the gates are passed, and it is the one that is entirely yours. The feed rules and the title guide are the fix, and grading your catalog against them is exactly what Entitled's free score does.
6. You are present but outranked
Being in the pipe and being picked are different problems. When multiple merchants can answer the question, OpenAI says ranking considers availability, price, quality and whether you are the maker or primary seller. Third-party research adds that reviews and community mentions correlate with being chosen.
If spot checks show your products appearing but never first, you have graduated from this page to the recommendation problem, which is a better problem to have.
7. Or you measured wrong
One prompt, one run, one account is not a measurement. Results vary between runs, and OpenAI notes results consider the asker's own context, so your own ChatGPT knows things about you that a shopper's does not. Not all available products are shown even when everything is right.
Test like a stranger, with a spread of buyer-intent prompts, more than once. The measurement page shows the honest way to do it by hand, and the app automates the same sampling weekly.
Frequently asked questions
Some of my products show in ChatGPT and others never do. Why?
Almost always product-level exclusion: a missing image, a zero price, Unlisted or hidden-from-search-engines status, B2B-only publication, or a prohibited category. Check the failing products against the Catalog exclusion list before touching anything else.
I blocked AI bots last year. Is that why I'm invisible?
Possibly half of it. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes your pages from ChatGPT search answers, while your product feed continues through Shopify Catalog. Unblock the search and user-fetch agents and give it a day.
I sell supplements. Can I get into ChatGPT shopping?
OpenAI's commerce policies of June 2026 prohibit ingestible products marketed for health effects, including weight loss, bodybuilding and detoxification. Product data work does not change a policy exclusion. Your AI-visibility path runs through content and community presence instead of shopping results.
How do I check properly whether my store shows up?
Use a spread of buyer-intent prompts a stranger would ask, in a fresh session, several times over a week, and record mentions rather than reacting to one answer. Single-prompt checks produce false alarms in both directions.
