Can you turn Agentic Storefronts off? Every control that exists
Last reviewed
Short answer
Mostly yes, and more than the forums believe. In Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic, deactivate 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' to get per-channel controls. ChatGPT has a Catalog-access opt-out that takes up to 7 days. Copilot and Google surfaces have direct checkout toggles. Per product, the Unlisted status removes it from Catalog entirely.
Why this page exists
Agentic Storefronts arrived on by default, and through spring 2026 the community threads filled with merchants asking why there was no way out. Vendor contracts, MAP pricing, copyright worries about product imagery, or simply not wanting to be there: the reasons varied, the answer they got did not. No opt-out.
That answer is now wrong, and repeating it costs merchants real options. Everything below is quoted from Shopify's current help documentation as read on 29 August 2026, with exact paths.
The master switch
In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic. The page opens with a toggle called 'Allow Shopify to manage for me'. While it is on, Shopify decides which channels your store participates in. Deactivate it and each channel becomes individually controllable.
This is the step the angry threads missed. The per-channel controls are invisible until the management toggle is off, which is easy to read as the controls not existing.
The per-channel controls
With management off, each channel row opens its own settings. What you can control differs by what the channel does.
| Channel | Control | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog access on/off | On | Deactivating takes up to 7 days to stop data sharing |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout on/off | On for eligible stores | No fees per Shopify's docs |
| Google AI Mode | Direct checkout on/off | On for eligible stores | Early access, not on all stores yet |
| Gemini | Direct checkout on/off | On for eligible stores | Grouped with Google AI Mode |
The ChatGPT case, precisely
ChatGPT has no purchase toggle because there is nothing to toggle: buyers are always sent to your own checkout. What it has is a discovery opt-out. Sales channels, then Agentic, deactivate 'Allow Shopify to manage for me', open ChatGPT, deactivate Shopify Catalog access, save. Shopify states it can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared.
One honest caveat from Shopify's own products page: turning off Catalog access stops the syndication, but your products may still appear through other discovery methods. ChatGPT can still read your public website the way any search engine can. Cutting that path too is a robots.txt decision, with its own costs.
Per product: the Unlisted status
For removing a single product rather than the store, Shopify shipped a fourth product status alongside Active, Draft and Archived. Unlisted keeps the product purchasable through a direct link, and in cart and checkout it behaves like an active product.
Everywhere else it disappears: Shopify's docs state it is excluded from Shopify Catalog, removed from the sitemap, removed from Shopify-powered collection pages, search and recommendations, and its page gets a noindex, nofollow robots meta tag. This is the tool for the products your supplier agreement says cannot be in an AI channel.
- Set it in the product's status field in the admin
- Removed from Shopify Catalog, so from all agentic channels
- Removed from sitemap, on-store search, collections and recommendations
- Page carries noindex, nofollow, so it leaves Google too
- Still purchasable via direct link, cart and checkout behave normally
What you still cannot control
Honesty section. The system arrives on by default and Shopify's pattern through 2026 has been to ship agent-facing surfaces first and document them after, so the next channel may also appear without asking. The Unlisted workaround removes a product from Google as well as from AI surfaces, so there is no per-product switch that says AI no, Google yes. And opting out of Catalog does not erase what assistants already learned from the open web.
If those gaps matter to your business, the control that remains is the one this platform has always had: what you publish. The data you put in the admin is the data every agent reads.
Frequently asked questions
Is there really a ChatGPT opt-out? The forums say no.
There is now. Shopify's ChatGPT help page documents deactivating Shopify Catalog access under Sales channels, then Agentic, after turning off 'Allow Shopify to manage for me'. It states data sharing stops within 7 days. Threads saying otherwise predate the current docs.
Can I keep Google but leave ChatGPT?
Yes. With 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' deactivated, each channel is controlled separately, so you can turn off ChatGPT's Catalog access while leaving Google AI Mode and Copilot active, or any other combination.
Can I hide one product from AI but keep it on Google?
No. The per-product tool is the Unlisted status, and it removes the product from Shopify Catalog and adds noindex, nofollow, so it leaves Google Search too. There is currently no product-level control that separates the two.
If I opt out, does my store vanish from ChatGPT immediately?
Catalog data sharing stops within up to 7 days per Shopify. Your public website remains readable by AI crawlers unless you also block them in robots.txt, and answers based on what models already learned do not un-learn on a schedule.
