Google AI Mode for Shopify stores: the pipe, the checkout, the toggles
Last reviewed
Short answer
Google AI Mode answers shopping questions from the Shopping Graph, which Google says holds over 60 billion product listings fed largely by Merchant Center data. Shopify stores participate through the Google and YouTube channel plus the Agentic storefronts channel, where direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini is activated by default for eligible stores, with no fees beyond payment processing.
What AI Mode is, and why it is not ChatGPT with a Google logo
AI Mode is Google's conversational search tab, available in more than 200 countries and past a billion monthly users by Google's own I/O 2026 telling. The commerce difference from ChatGPT: its product answers are grounded in the Shopping Graph, the same product database behind Google Shopping, which Google described in May 2026 as holding over 60 billion listings with billions refreshed hourly.
That grounding is why the merchant playbook here is feed-shaped. Where ChatGPT's pipe for Shopify stores is Shopify Catalog, Google's pipe is Merchant Center, and the quality of what you feed it decides what an AI Mode answer can say about you.
How a Shopify store gets in
Two channels do the work. The Google and YouTube channel syncs products and shipping into Merchant Center, and Google's free listings can then surface products across Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images and Lens at no cost, with Google noting inclusion is not guaranteed. The Agentic storefronts channel adds the AI Mode and Gemini piece on top.
Shopify's help page lists the eligibility gates for the AI Mode and Gemini channel: a store in the US, UK, Australia or Canada, the Google and YouTube channel installed with automatic syncing, products meeting Shopify Catalog standards, completed policy pages, and the supplemental terms accepted. Familiar list, same shape as ChatGPT's, one more reason the policy pages stopped being optional paperwork.
Direct checkout, and where the toggle lives
Eligible stores get Shopify-powered direct checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini conversations, on by default, US buyers only for now. Shopify's wording: purchasing through direct checkout is activated by default for eligible stores, and there are no fees beyond your standard payment processing.
The control sits where all the agentic toggles sit: Sales channels, then Agentic, deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me, open Google AI Mode and Gemini, and set Direct checkout. Opted-out products stay discoverable through the Google and YouTube channel and send buyers to your own checkout instead. The full toggle map is on the controls page.
Universal Cart and where this is heading
In May 2026 Google announced Universal Cart: one cart aggregating items across Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail, with checkout through Google Pay or a hand-off to the merchant site, and the merchant staying merchant of record. Launch names included Shopify merchants, and Google's UCP protocol underneath is co-developed with Shopify, which is why participation mostly arrives in your admin rather than in your backlog.
The work that compounds through all of it is the same feed hygiene: complete attributes, accurate price and availability, and the new conversational attributes Google added to Merchant Center in 2026 for exactly these AI surfaces, question-and-answer fields among them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Google and YouTube channel for AI Mode?
Yes, per Shopify's eligibility list: the channel installed with automatic product and shipping syncing is a stated requirement, because Merchant Center is the data path AI Mode grounds on.
Does Google charge for AI Mode direct checkout?
Shopify's help page states there are no fees associated with selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout, only your standard payment processing fees.
My store is outside the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Am I out?
Of the direct checkout channel currently, yes, per Shopify's eligibility list, and Google says UCP checkout is expanding to more countries. Free listings and Merchant Center participation are broader, so the feed work still pays while the checkout footprint grows.
Is ranking in AI Mode the same as ranking in Google Shopping?
They draw on the same Shopping Graph, so feed quality serves both, but selection differs: AI Mode composes an answer to a constrained question rather than a ranked grid. Attribute completeness matters more, position tracking matters differently.
