ChatGPT ads for merchants: what they are, what they cost, what they don't do
Last reviewed
Short answer
ChatGPT ads began testing in the US on 9 February 2026 and opened to self-serve buying on 5 May 2026 through OpenAI's Ads Manager. The format is a single labeled unit below responses, bought on CPC or CPM in a relevance-weighted second-price auction. OpenAI states plainly that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and organic product results remain free and unbuyable.
The timeline, because half the advice online predates it
9 February 2026: testing begins in the US, shown only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers, with OpenAI stating Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education see no ads. 26 March: pilots announced for Canada, Australia and New Zealand. 5 May: the beta self-serve Ads Manager opens, letting businesses sign up and buy directly. 11 August: launch in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
So as of this page's date, a US merchant of any size can create an account at OpenAI's ads site and run campaigns, self-serve, the way search ads work. Guides describing ChatGPT ads as enterprise-only were true in March and are not true now.
What you are actually buying
One unit: a clearly labeled sponsored placement below the response, carrying advertiser name, title, copy, image and landing page. Bidding is CPM for reach or CPC for clicks, in what OpenAI describes as a relevance-weighted second-price auction, with a recommended starting bid of three to five dollars per click. Targeting works through context hints about the conversation rather than exact-match keywords.
Measurement shipped alongside: a conversion pixel and API, which OpenAI announced with the self-serve launch. Retail product-feed ads, catalogs connected so products serve as ads, arrived through partner platforms per trade reporting in May 2026, secondary sourcing, so treat feed-ads specifics as moving.
The line that matters more than the product
OpenAI's own words: ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you, they are always clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer, and the ad systems run separately from the chat model. And from the merchant side: there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT organically.
Hold both halves. Buying ads does not improve your presence in organic product results, and ignoring ads does not hurt it. They are two channels sharing a screen, exactly like search ads and organic rankings, and every vendor blurring that line is selling the blur.
Should a small store buy them?
The honest frame is that this is a paid channel in open beta: young auctions, thin benchmark data, and a buyer pool that has not yet bid prices up. That cuts both ways, cheap experiments are possible and nothing about performance is proven for small-store economics.
The sequencing advice stands regardless: paid placement below an answer competes with whatever the organic answer says, so the free work that gets your products into the answer itself comes first. An ad under an answer that already recommends you is a moat. An ad under an answer that recommends your competitor is a subsidy for the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Can buying ChatGPT ads get my products recommended in answers?
No. OpenAI states ads do not influence answers and run on separate systems from the chat model, and that organic product results are selected independently and are not ads. The two do not touch.
How do I actually start a campaign?
Through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager at its ads site, open to businesses since 5 May 2026, US first with the country list growing. Accounts can be created elsewhere but do not serve until a country is supported.
Which ChatGPT users see ads at all?
Logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers in supported countries, per OpenAI. Paid tiers, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education, are stated as ad-free, which shapes who your ads can reach.
What does a click cost?
OpenAI's own guidance recommends starting maximum bids of three to five dollars per click in its second-price auction. Real costs depend on the auction for your context, and benchmark data is too young to trust beyond that.
