ACP vs UCP vs AP2: the protocol wars, mapped for merchants
Last reviewed
Short answer
Three protocols, three jobs. ACP, from OpenAI and Stripe, moves product feeds and orders between merchants and ChatGPT. UCP, from Google and Shopify, is the commerce layer behind Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot Checkout. AP2, Google-initiated and donated to the FIDO Alliance, handles the payment authorisation an agent carries. A Shopify merchant inherits all three through the platform rather than implementing any of them.
Why protocols suddenly matter to people who sell candles
Because the checkout button grew an API. When an assistant buys on a shopper's behalf, the merchant, the AI surface and the payment need a shared language for what is for sale, what is in the cart and who authorised the charge. Through 2025 and 2026 three languages emerged, each anchored by different giants, and your store speaks whichever ones your platform implements.
The merchant-relevant fact about all three: they are open standards, Apache-licensed, designed to be implemented by platforms. Shopify co-develops one and integrates with the others, which is why this page is a map rather than a to-do list.

The plot so far, in four dated beats
September 2025: OpenAI and Stripe ship ACP with in-chat Instant Checkout, and Google launches AP2 with sixty-plus partners, its mandates carried as W3C Verifiable Credentials, a cart and payment the user cryptographically signed off on. January 2026: Google and Shopify answer with UCP, and Microsoft launches Copilot Checkout, initially onboarding merchants through ACP.
March 2026: OpenAI retires Instant Checkout, refocusing ACP on discovery, the story told on the checkout page. April 2026: Google donates AP2 to the FIDO Alliance, whose release describes v0.2 adding pre-authorised purchases where the human is not present, and Microsoft adds UCP feed support alongside ACP. The arrows point one direction: discovery consolidating around feeds, checkout consolidating around UCP, payments consolidating around AP2 under neutral governance.
What a Shopify merchant actually has to do
Almost nothing, which is the correct amount. Catalog puts your products in ACP's discovery world, Shopify's UCP-compliant infrastructure, including the MCP servers, puts you on the UCP surfaces, and AP2 rides underneath checkouts you never see. The protocols are why the channel toggles exist at all: they are your interface to all of this.
The one thing the protocols cannot standardise is whether your products are worth recommending. Every one of them moves the same titles, descriptions, prices and availability, which keeps the honest advice boring: the data is the strategy, and the plumbing is somebody else's job done well.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pick a winner?
No. Your platform implements them, and Shopify already speaks all three worlds: Catalog into ACP discovery, co-developed UCP, and AP2-compatible checkout rails. Merchants on platforms that pick none are the ones with a decision to make.
Is UCP why my store shows in Copilot and Google AI Mode?
It is the transaction layer for those surfaces per Shopify's announcement, with discovery fed by Shopify Catalog and Merchant Center data. The toggles in Sales channels, then Agentic, are your controls over that participation.
What is an AP2 mandate?
The protocol's signed object, not a regulation: a cryptographically verifiable record of what the user authorised, intent, cart and payment, carried as W3C Verifiable Credentials, so a merchant and issuer can trust an agent-initiated charge. Version 0.2 added pre-authorised flows where the human is not present at purchase time.
Will these merge?
Unknown, and the incentives lean toward coexistence with bridges: Microsoft already supports both ACP onboarding and UCP feeds, and UCP lists AP2 among its transports. Merchants inherit the bridges the same way they inherit the protocols.
