SEO vs AEO: what carries over, and what actually changed
Last reviewed
Short answer
SEO earns a position in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside a generated answer. For a Shopify store most of the work transfers: crawlable pages, accurate product data and real authority serve both. What changed is the unit of competition, from pages ranking on keywords to product data matching a shopper's constraints, and the one genuinely new surface is the feed.
The one-sentence versions
SEO, search engine optimization, is the work of ranking pages in a list of results a human then filters. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of being present and correct inside the single answer an assistant gives instead of a list. Same shopper, same intent, different delivery.
The acronym pile-up around it, GEO, LLMO, AI visibility, mostly names the same practice from different angles. We use AEO for the practice and AI visibility for the outcome, and none of the vocabulary changes what a store should do on a Tuesday.
What carries straight over
Crawlability, first. Assistants run their own crawlers, and OpenAI states plainly that sites opted out of its search bot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. A store that cannot be crawled loses both games at once, which is why the robots.txt decisions sit upstream of everything.
Authority, second, in a mutated form. Google counted links. The best current evidence for AI answers, Ahrefs' study across 75,000 brands, found branded web mentions the strongest correlate of appearing in them. Links were the currency, mentions are the successor, and both are earned the same slow way: being worth talking about.
What changed shape
Keywords became constraints. A Google shopper typed the query and filtered results themselves. An assistant shopper states constraints, material, budget, use case, and the assistant does the filtering against product data. That moves the optimization target from a page's keyword usage to a product's attribute completeness.
And the SERP became a feed. The genuinely new surface with no SEO equivalent is the product feed: Shopify syndicates your catalog to AI surfaces through Catalog, and OpenAI publishes an actual specification for what good product data looks like. There was never a published spec for ranking in Google. There is one for this.
What this means for effort allocation
If you have working SEO, nothing above says abandon it. Google still sends most of the traffic, and the crawlability and authority work double-counts. What deserves reallocating is the marginal hour: for most stores the SEO backlog is picked over, while the feed-quality backlog has never been touched once.
The honest sequence: confirm crawler access, grade the catalog against the feed rules, fix the weakest products, then measure whether assistants mention you so the next hour goes where the data points.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just SEO rebranded to sell new tools?
The vocabulary is marketing, the surface change is real. Assistants answer instead of listing, they ingest product feeds no SEO tool optimized, and OpenAI publishes data-quality rules with no SERP equivalent. Judge tools by whether they act on those mechanisms, not by which acronym they wear.
Should I do AEO instead of SEO?
No. The foundations are shared, and Google remains the larger traffic source for almost every store. The case is for adding the feed-quality and measurement work SEO never covered, not for swapping one acronym's to-do list for another's.
Do keywords matter for AEO?
As facts, yes. An assistant matching a linen constraint needs linen stated in your data. As density and repetition, no. The habit worth keeping from keyword research is learning the words buyers use, then stating them once, truthfully.
How do I know if AEO work is doing anything?
Sampled measurement: run a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts on a schedule and track the trend in mentions. Single checks prove nothing in either direction, which is why the honest framing is directional, and it is how Entitled's own tracking is built.
