Does SEO still matter now that everyone asks ChatGPT?

Short answer
Yes, because AI answers are assembled from the same raw material search always ran on: crawled pages, product data and authority signals. An unindexable store is invisible to assistants for the same reasons it was invisible to Google. What genuinely shrank is the payoff of clicks from informational queries. What did not shrink is the machinery underneath.
The honest version of the bad news
Fewer searches end in a click on a website. SparkToro's 2026 analysis, third-party but the most cited count available, puts fewer than a third of Google searches still sending a click anywhere. Informational content built to harvest clicks is the casualty, and stores whose blogs did that work have felt it.
It is worth being precise about what died there. The click died for questions an answer engine can answer in place. A purchase cannot be answered in place: someone still lands on a checkout, yours or a competitor's. Commerce queries changed route, not destination.
Why the machinery still matters
Assistants do not know your store by revelation. OpenAI documents its crawlers and recommends allowing its search bot for a site to appear in ChatGPT search answers, and Google states its AI features draw on its existing index. The pipeline is crawl, index, retrieve, generate, and the first two words are SEO's home turf.
Blocked crawlers, noindexed products, broken canonicals, unreachable pages: every classic technical SEO failure now fails twice, once in the SERP and once in the answer. The store that ignored SEO did not skip a dying discipline. It skipped the prerequisites for the new one.
Where the effort moved
Three shifts, none of which abandon the fundamentals. From publishing more to publishing answerable: content structured around real questions, with facts an assistant can lift. From keywords to attribute-complete product data, because assistants filter on constraints. From rank tracking alone to mention tracking too, because position ten in a SERP exists and position ten in a three-product answer does not.
The work that transfers untouched: crawlability, site structure, real authority. The work that got demoted: click-harvesting informational content and anything whose whole theory was density.
The answer for your Tuesday
Keep the SEO that keeps you indexable, because everything downstream depends on it. Add the feed and data-quality work, because it is the part of the new surface with published rules and the part most stores have never touched. Measure both, because reallocating effort by feel is how the last decade of SEO budgets got wasted.
And be suspicious of anyone selling either extreme. SEO is dead sells you a new tool. SEO is fine sells you the old one. The boring truth, that the fundamentals became prerequisites for a second surface, sells nothing, which is a decent sign it is true.
Frequently asked questions
My organic traffic dropped but sales held. What is happening?
The common 2026 pattern: informational clicks evaporate while commercial intent finds new routes, including assistants that send buyers directly to product and checkout pages. Judge channels by revenue attribution rather than sessions before declaring an emergency.
Should I stop writing blog content?
Stop writing click-harvest content that answers questions an assistant now answers in place. Keep writing what earns mentions and answers buyer questions: buying guides with real comparisons, sizing and compatibility answers, content only you can write. Quotable beats voluminous.
If clicks are dying, why does crawlability matter?
Because assistants build answers from crawled pages even when no click follows. Being read without being visited is the new normal for informational queries, and being read requires everything indexing always required.
Is this different for stores than for publishers?
Meaningfully. Publishers monetized the click itself, so zero-click is existential for them. Stores monetize the purchase, which still requires a checkout. The store version of the problem is being absent from the answer, which is an AEO problem with SEO prerequisites.
