Does llms.txt do anything for a Shopify store?

Short answer
On current evidence, very little. Google states it ignores llms.txt entirely. Ahrefs studied 137,210 domains and found 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. Shopify now serves a default agents.md and llms.txt on hosted storefronts, so paying an app to generate one is buying something you already have.
What the evidence says
Google's Search Central documentation is unusually blunt: you do not need to create machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search including its generative capabilities, because Google Search does not use them. It goes on to say doing so will neither harm nor help visibility.
Ahrefs studied 137,210 domains and found that of the roughly 28% publishing an llms.txt, 97% received zero requests to that file during May 2026. Of the small number that got any requests at all, AI retrieval bots accounted for about 1.1% of requests to those files. That is a rounding error dressed as a channel.
Shopify already does it
Shopify began serving a default agents.md, with llms.txt and llms-full.txt mirroring it, on Shopify-hosted storefronts around May 2026, and published a changelog for customising them. If your storefront is Shopify-hosted, the file exists whether or not you install anything.
One caveat worth knowing: headless storefronts running on custom infrastructure do not get this automatically. If you are headless, the file is yours to serve, and the evidence above still suggests it is not where your effort belongs.
What to do instead
The effort that would have gone into an llms.txt is better spent on the data assistants demonstrably do read. For a Shopify store that is the product catalog, which Shopify syndicates directly to AI surfaces.
Concretely: grade your titles against the published feed rules, fill empty descriptions, confirm crawler access, and connect the ChatGPT and Perplexity channels. All of those have documented mechanisms behind them.
