How to see ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4 and Shopify
Last reviewed
Short answer
Two places, neither complete. GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026 that groups referrals from chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Shopify admin reports sessions, orders and conversion per agentic channel under Sales channels, then Agentic. Both undercount, because AI apps frequently strip the referrer and those visits land in Direct.
What GA4 now does on its own
Since 13 May 2026, GA4's release notes describe an AI Assistant channel in the Default Channel Group: when the referrer matches a recognised AI assistant, the medium is auto-assigned ai-assistant and the session lands in the new channel, no configuration required. ChatGPT usually also appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it cites, which makes those sessions unambiguous.
Three limits worth knowing before you trust the number. The channel is not retroactive, so history stays where it was. Google's recognised-source list is Google's, and at launch Perplexity was still landing in Referral, so check your own property rather than assuming. And clicks out of Google's AI Overviews count as Organic Search, invisibly, which no channel setting changes.
What Shopify admin shows
Shopify reports the agentic channels natively: Sales channels, then Agentic, shows sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion, filterable by channel, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Shop. For the question that pays your bills, did AI send orders, this report beats GA4 because it sits on Shopify's own attribution. Shopify notes these analytics are not yet available for headless stores.
For scale context, Shopify's own May 2026 numbers: AI chatbot referral sessions grew more than 8x year over year in Q1 2026, AI-referred orders nearly 13x, and more than half of AI-referred sessions start on a product page against about 20% for organic search. Small base, steep curve, product-page-first, which is also why product data quality is the lever.
The undercount, and the honest fix
AI traffic hides. Mobile apps and app-to-browser handoffs frequently strip the referrer header, and stripped sessions land in Direct. One vendor analysis of 41 million sessions found about 71% of ChatGPT traffic showing as Direct, vendor research, so treat the number as illustrative rather than gospel, but the mechanism is real and every practitioner sees it. Whatever your dashboards show for AI, the truth is higher.
The fix that exists: a custom channel group. GA4's own docs cover it, Admin, Data display, Channel groups, copy the default group, add an AI channel matching session source against a regex of the assistant domains, chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai. Google publishes an example regex and notes you should update it as assistants change. It catches what the default channel's source list misses, and nothing catches the stripped sessions.
- GA4: confirm the AI Assistant channel exists in your property and what it caught this month
- GA4: build the custom channel group with the assistant-domain regex for the gaps
- Shopify: read Sales channels, then Agentic, for per-channel sessions and orders
- Both: treat Direct's growth alongside AI growth as partly the same story
- Never compare pre-May-2026 history against the new channel, it is not retroactive
What to actually watch monthly
Three numbers, trend not level. AI-channel sessions across GA4's channel plus your custom group, as the reach signal. Shopify's agentic orders, as the money signal. And the ratio of AI sessions landing on product pages, because it tells you which products assistants send people to, which loops back into what to fix next.
Traffic is the lagging half of measurement. The leading half is whether assistants mention you at all when shoppers ask, which no analytics tool sees, and which is its own discipline with its own honesty problems.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Direct traffic grow at the same time as my AI traffic?
Probably the same visitors. AI apps frequently strip the referrer, and stripped sessions report as Direct. Rising Direct alongside rising tagged AI traffic usually means the AI channel is larger than either number alone shows.
Does the GA4 AI Assistant channel include Google's own AI features?
AI Overviews clicks count as Organic Search, not the AI Assistant channel, because they come from google.com. Gemini app referrals are among the recognised sources per Google's release note. The channel measures assistant referrals, not Google's in-search AI.
Can I see which products AI traffic lands on?
Yes, in GA4 use landing page filtered to your AI channels; in Shopify the agentic report gives per-channel sessions. Shopify's own data says over half of AI-referred sessions start on a product page, so this view usually explains itself quickly.
Is AI traffic actually worth anything yet?
Small and disproportionately valuable is the evidenced answer: Shopify reports AI-referred visitors converting at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search, with 14% higher average order values. Percentages of a small base, growing 8x to 13x year over year. Watch your own numbers, not the averages.
