This surprises most merchants, because every other channel in ecommerce has been something you switch on and configure. This one was switched on for you. The useful question is not how to connect, it is whether you are eligible and whether the data being sent is any good.

The one gate that catches people
Shopify's ChatGPT page states the requirement plainly: your store must sell to customers in the United States, however your store can be based outside the United States.
So being a Norwegian or British or Australian company is not the problem. Not selling to American customers is. If you do not ship to the US, this channel is closed to you regardless of how good your product data is, and that is worth knowing before you spend a weekend rewriting titles.
It is not only ChatGPT
The same pipeline feeds more than one assistant. Shopify describes agentic storefronts as letting customers discover and purchase your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta.
Which is the strongest argument for treating this as one job rather than four. There is no per-assistant tuning available to a merchant. There is one set of product data, and it either reads well everywhere or it reads badly everywhere.
What to do once you have confirmed you are in
The work moves to the data, because the data is the only part you control. Shopify lists products with their title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes, structured so AI agents can parse them.
