IndexNow for Shopify: what it does, and what it does not
Last reviewed
Short answer
IndexNow is a protocol for telling search engines a URL changed, instead of waiting to be recrawled. It is supported by Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep. Google does not participate. It matters for AI search because Bing's index feeds some AI retrieval.
What it is
IndexNow is a simple push protocol. You host a key file on your domain, then submit changed URLs to an endpoint, and participating engines are notified immediately rather than discovering the change on their own schedule. IndexNow.org lists support from Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep.
Google is not on that list and has not joined. Any tool that implies IndexNow accelerates Google indexing is wrong, and it is an easy claim to check.
Why it still matters for AI
The honest case for IndexNow in an AI context is indirect: Bing's index feeds retrieval for some AI search products. Faster propagation into that index means a changed product title reaches those surfaces sooner. That is a real mechanism, and it is also a modest one. Framing it as an AI submission channel would be overselling.
The more valuable property is evidential. A timestamped submission log turns "we changed your titles" into a chain you can inspect: applied, verified live on the storefront, submitted at a specific time. Most bulk SEO tools cannot show you the middle step, which is the source of their worst reviews.
Using it on Shopify
IndexNow requires a key file hosted on the domain whose URLs you are submitting. On Shopify that is awkward, because you do not have arbitrary root file access. The workable route is a Shopify app proxy, which serves the key from your store domain while the app holds it.
Entitled does this automatically and pings IndexNow on every apply, cron re-apply and webhook-driven change, with a visible daily quota and a submission log. The Google caveat is stated in the UI rather than buried, because the alternative is a support ticket in three weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does IndexNow work with Google?
No. IndexNow.org lists Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep as participants. Google has not joined and submitting to IndexNow does nothing for Google indexing.
Is IndexNow worth using if Google is my main channel?
It costs nothing to run, so the marginal case is easy. But do not expect Google movement from it. Its value is faster propagation to Bing and the AI retrieval that draws on Bing's index, plus a timestamped record of what you changed and when.
Can I use IndexNow on Shopify without an app?
It requires a key file hosted on your domain, which Shopify does not let you place at the root arbitrarily. An app proxy is the usual route, which in practice means using an app that implements it.
